Key projects
The annual Rotherham Show took place on 2 and 3 September 2023, attracting around 88,000 visitors. Throughout the weekend, the show celebrated the spirit of the borough and gave people the chance to enjoy a free festival of culture, entertainment and family fun.
A wide range of projects were undertaken with 68 primary and secondary schools to raise awareness of hate crime and how to report it. Activities included:
- A project with Year 1 pupils in 29 primary schools using road safety as a vehicle to introduce hate and bullying as a discussion topic.
- An exhibition of artwork created by Swinton Academy students on the theme of hate crime at Swinton Library.
- Hate Crime Awareness Week activities involving Brinsworth Academy, Victim Support and South Yorkshire Police.
Leading organisations across the borough pledged their support to the Armed Forces Covenant, recognising the valuable contribution made by service personnel, reservists, veterans and military families to Rotherham.
The Family Hub approach has been implemented in children's centres across the borough, providing integrated support for families. Up to 16 services are now co-located within Family Hubs, making services easier to access and helping families receive the right support at the right time.
Representatives from Rotherham's Health and Wellbeing Board pledged their support to make Rotherham a breastfeeding-friendly borough. The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust also launched the Rotherham Backs Breastfeeding campaign to promote advice, guidance and support services for new mothers and families.
The Rotherham Climate and Nature Charter was co-produced by members of the Rotherham Together Partnership, giving organisations the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to tackling climate and nature emergencies.
A new community woodland was created in Dinnington, where 7,700 trees were planted through funding from the Woodland Trust's Grow Back Greener programme. Before planting began, children from Laughton All Saints Primary School took part in a community litter pick to help prepare the site.
Youth Cabinet members were formally trained in carbon literacy and can now deliver the programme to their peers in schools and youth groups across the borough.
